ABSTRACT

Matthew 17:20 is one of the most frequently cited yet most frequently misunderstood statements of Jesus. The declaration that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains is often interpreted either as a literal promise of supernatural power or as a formula for achieving extraordinary personal results. This study re-examines the passage through a qualitative theological-exegetical approach by focusing on its literary context, symbolic structure, and theological implications within the Gospel of Matthew. The analysis demonstrates that Jesus does not present faith as a quantifiable spiritual force but as authentic dependence upon God. In its immediate context, the statement functions as a correction of the disciples’ failure and misplaced reliance rather than as an endorsement of spiritual spectacle. The metaphor of the mustard seed emphasizes smallness, life, and growth, while the mountain symbolizes what appears impossible from a human perspective. Accordingly, “moving mountains” should be understood primarily as a theological metaphor for overcoming spiritual, existential, and redemptive barriers through divine power. This study proposes a multidimensional interpretive framework consisting of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive dimensions to account for the complexity of the passage. By doing so, the article contributes to biblical theology, discipleship studies, and pastoral theology by offering a more coherent and non-reductionist understanding of faith in Matthew 17:20 (Carson 1995; France 2007; Keener 2009; Osborne 2010).
